Hello, We Are Bluegrass Doulas

After years of solo Doula work, Kate and Rebecca created Bluegrass Doulas in 2015. They knew they needed more for their clients, their businesses and their families. Over a three day long text message while on vacation, they developed their partnership. This partnership allows for them to do the work they love full time, while providing the best service and resources to families in the Louisville area. They are especially passionate about serving families who have traditionally been underserved in the medical community, specifically families of color and LGBTQIA families.

Established in 2015, Kate and Rebecca, along with their team, have supported over 500 families through life's biggest moments.

Rebecca Mercer

Co-Owner

Birth and Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator

Rebecca married the love of her life in 2011 and together they are blessed with three beautiful children. You may recognize her from her decade as manager at ear X-tacy. Having always been intrigued by the birth process Rebecca was excited to take a childbirth class and was amazed by all of the birth options that she had not been aware of. This new knowledge reinforced her interest in pregnancy and birth and through the process, brought her and her husband even closer together.

With a passion for educating and supporting others, Rebecca became certified as a birth and postpartum doula through DONA International and became a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator. Teaching couples about their options and supporting their choices is a dream come true for Rebecca.

Prior to beginning her career as a birth worker, Rebecca worked as the Director of Student Leadership at Presentation Academy. Rebecca is a graduate of Bellarmine University and feels so fortunate to have found her true calling as a birth professional.

When she is not teaching or providing doula services, you can find her enjoying her family or quietly snuggled up under a blanket sipping an early morning cup of coffee.

Kate Metten

Co-Owner

Birth and Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator

After investing 10 years in working for families around the Louisville area as a Nanny, Kate realized that supporting children and families would become a lifelong passion. This, combined with becoming a mother herself, set the tone for her to begin her training as a doula, which she completed in 2012. Kate is certified as a doula through DONA International and as a Childbirth Educator through Lamaze.

Kate graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelors in Justice Administration in 2006 and went on to complete Masters coursework at Georgetown College in Special Education, after which she spent some time working in preschool and elementary school settings.

She continues her education at every opportunity. She has extensive knowledge and experience which includes facilitating postpartum support groups and providing support for families during the devastation of infant loss, an area close to her heart as a fellow loss mom. Kate’s hope is that all families feel the empowerment and confidence that can come with parenthood. She is thrilled to play a role helping them attain it!

When not supporting clients or immersed in birth work, you can find her enjoying life with her family in Shelbyville. With three sons, you’ll often find them exploring the world around them. Things they love most include camping and hiking, trips to the beach, and Marvel themed movie nights.

In the middle of her first pregnancy, Carrie attended a local childbirth class that changed the trajectory of her life! It left her feeling so informed and empowered for her own birth experiences and was the spark for her eventual career doing the same for others.

After the birth of her children, Carrie passionately began helping others with childbirth and breastfeeding education. Her hope is to help others embrace their power and have the best birth experiences possible.

Her other passions include animal rescue and helping to reduce the homeless pet population. Her family is usually fostering at least one dog with Louisville Metro Animal Services. She also enjoys crocheting and photography.

Fun Fact: Rebecca and Carrie graduated high school together!

Marci Edlin

Postpartum Doula

Marci married her high school sweetheart in 2010 and together they have four wonderful children.  After having a traumatic first birth experience, she knew there had to be a better way for delivering her future children. She connected with Kate and Rebecca to attend their Lamaze class and learned just how valuable doulas are to a positive birth experience.  This class helped prepare them for an unexpected precipitous labor and gave them confidence to self-advocate with medical staff. For Marci's final delivery they were blessed to have Rebecca assist with the birth.

Marci graduated from Murray State University with a degree in Learning and Behavior Disorders. Later she completed her Master's Degree in Elementary Education at Indiana University while serving families as a Special Education Teacher in Oldham County.

Her passion continues to be supporting parents in the midst of family transitions.

When she's not serving families she loves spending time with her own family, especially swimming, playing with their dogs, and family movie nights.

Lauren Garver.jpg

Lauren Garver

Postpartum Doula

Lauren, a Louisville native, moved to New York to attend SUNY Purchase for college graduating in 2005 with a degree in Journalism.  She lived and worked in NYC and Long Island for a few years before moving home to Louisville where she bought and remodeled her first home, met her cycling buddy (now husband!), and became a mama.

Lauren's lifelong dream was to be a mom.  She is the eldest of four children and enjoyed caring for babies more than anything for as long as she can remember.  She was changing diapers, giving bottles, and burping tiny ones from the age of 5 years old. She babysat and nannied on the side for all of her teenage and adult life. Always carrying a deep love for newborn babies in particular.

At 40 years old Lauren has followed her heart down a few different paths such as real estate investment, sales and primarily taking care of her two babies.  As her biggest dream of becoming a mom came true she was blessed with experience from two very different birth and postpartum circumstances.  After the traumatic birth of her secondborn, George, she gained a new perspective on life in general but particularly on an event called HIE that occurs when there's loss of oxygen at birth. Today her baby boy is thriving.

A lifetime of experiences led to the perfect path to becoming a Postpartum Doula in 2021.  She is beyond grateful for the opportunity to support other parents, care for their babies, and provide comfort during such an important time in their lives.

Cheryl Gribbins

Birth and Postpartum Doula

Cheryl is a Louisville native and has worked in early childhood education and as a family photographer for the last several years. With each of her three unique pregnancy and birth experiences, her passion for education and advocacy for new parents has grown. As a young mom, she experienced firsthand the impact that educated and informed choices and the support of a doula can have on the entire pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Her goal as a doula is to support the entire new family with encouragement, empathy, and the knowledge to build trust in their own strengths and abilities to care for their newborn.

In addition to birth advocacy, Cheryl is a Lactation Educator and is passionate about connecting new parents with information and resources to support them in achieving their unique feeding goals. After experiencing firsthand with her oldest son how hard it can be to navigate contradicting advice and opinions, she made it a goal to pursue certification as an IBCLC in the future.

Cheryl and her fiance and their large blended family love trips to Red River Gorge, Climb Nulu, and walks through the Zoo. They are members of Keneseth Israel Congregation. She loves to spend her free time re-watching Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, and drinking oat milk lattes.

JaimieJohnson.jpg

Jaimie Johnson

Birth and Postpartum Doula

Jaimie was introduced to the doula world through a prenatal yoga class that she attended through both of her births. After connecting with the instructor, who was a doula, and other pregnant women in her class, she discovered a Lamaze birth education course which changed the trajectory of her life. Through this class, she realized how powerful it is to be able to advocate for yourself through informed decision making and empowerment. She wanted to be able to impact others in the same way, which led her to become a certified birth educator, doula, and prenatal yoga instructor. Before pursuing this career, Jaimie was an elementary school teacher for Bullitt County Public Schools for 9 years. She is currently still substitute teaching and empowering students. Jaimie also stays very active and spends most of her free time exploring, gardening, reading, jogging, and relaxing outdoors with her two sons and husband! She is always looking for new ways to expand and grow!

in Theatre. After a couple years spent in Los Angeles, CA pursuing her dream of performing she
settled back in Louisville. She met her husband shortly after they now have 2 daughters.

others. She believes her background in theatre has prepared her for the unpredictability of birth work
and does her best to bring a sense of calm to every situation.

When she’s not working as a doula, sheenjoys hiking, practicing yoga, being a huge musical theatre nerd, strolling the aisles at Target and designing her dream farmhouse. Alyssa also shares her home with a dog, 2 tortoises and a pig named Penny.

Clare Olberz

Postpartum Doula

Clare and her husband Brian live in the Highlands with their three rambunctious kids. Clare graduated from Western Illinois University in 2008 with a degree in Social Work. After graduating college she moved to Louisville and began working as the Post Placement Director at a local adoption agency where her passion for supporting new parents was ignited. She has always been drawn to all things birth, postpartum, and newborn babies. She completed her birth doula training in 2012 as a way to become more informed about the birthing process before growing her own family. Her passion and knowledge of the birthing process and options grew exponentially. She became involved with the Kentucky Home Birth Coalition and proceeded to have three amazing birthing experiences under the care of local midwives in the comfort of her own home. After having her first child she realized the gravity of how important support for new parents is in the postpartum season and how our culture is seriously lacking in this regard. She became determined to work in any way possible to help fulfill this need. She completed her postpartum doula training in 2014 and began facilitating local support groups for new moms. She loves being able to use all of her years of education and experience to support new parents in this sacred and vulnerable transition. It is an absolute honor and joy for her. When Clare isn’t working with new parents and babies you can find her spending time with her family and friends. She loves hiking, camping, getting dirty in her garden, and cooking tasty meals for her family.

Ashton Petersmith

Birth and Postpartum Doula

Ashton moved to Louisville in 2005 to attend the University of Louisville where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. For over a decade since, she has committed her time to jobs with a focus on supporting children and families. In 2011 she married her husband, a Louisville native, and firmly planted roots here. That same year, she began a Master's program at the University of Louisville to further her education in an effort to support families through mental health counseling, which she completed in 2013. She has worked with many families as a mental health counselor and is a Licensed Mental Health Counseling Associate in the state of Indiana. Her wealth of knowledge as a mental health counselor is a valuable asset to supporting families through the joys and challenges of welcoming new babies.

Giving birth to her first child in 2013 opened her up to the world of birth and she quickly developed a fierce passion for it. After a long period of "waiting for the right time”, and welcoming her second baby in 2016, she finally made the leap to officially become a DONA trained doula.

Fun fact: Kate and Rebecca were her Doulas! She is excited to continue her lifelong passion supporting others in her role as a doula, walking alongside parents as they prepare themselves to meet the most important people of their lives. When not working Ashton enjoys being a homebody with her family, reading, and watching a little too much Netflix.

Erin Quinlan

Birth Doula

Erin is a shapeshifter, space maker, and inter-disciplinarian. Her work as a doula is inspired by years of studying the magic of bodies, situational adaptability, and advocacy.

Erin graduated from the University of Louisville with a BA in Humanities and from American University with a MA in Arts Management before settling back in her hometown of Louisville with her husband Shane in 2015.

A lifelong dancer, she found a new movement practice as a yoga instructor and currently teaches at multiple local studios.

With the guidance of Kate and Rebecca, Erin became a mother to Fitz in 2017 and Murphy in 2021. Her very different, but equally beautiful, birth experiences helped her truly understand the importance of an empowered birth and inspired her to become a doula. Her primary goal is for each birthing person to feel empowered, supported, and advocated for in a personal way.

A lifelong learner, Erin is also a photographer, reiki master, amateur chef, and wannabe unicorn. When she’s not wrapped up in her latest hobby, you can find her porch sitting with dear friends at Nolin Lake.

Amanda and her husband of 8 years have 3 children together. It's through the love of her children that she found her passion for supporting families, which led her to become a Doula.

Ashley Trevino.jpeg

Ashley Trevino

Birth and Postpartum Doula

Ashley is a military spouse and mother of three. She met her husband in Dallas, TX and they have been married for 10 years. Her passion for the birth world began with her first pregnancy. Finding herself stationed in one of the worst states to have a baby, she decided early on to become educated on all of her options surrounding prenatal care and her upcoming birth. She quickly learned that being educated wasn’t enough, she was a young first time mother and a woman of color living in the south who was not taken seriously. She then decided to hire a doula to also help advocate for her and her family. Ashley walked away from her first birth feeling extremely empowered and amazed by the manner in which her doula treated her during her birth.

Ashley began researching while learning more about the rewarding job of being a doula while also having her 2nd child (with her doula by her side) and living overseas, in South Korea. She later went on to have her 3rd baby at home with just herself and her husband. An experience that she would say changed her life forever.

She truly believes in helping birthing people discover their power and their voice in one of the most special moments of their lives.

On her time off you can find Ashley hiking, working out and just spending time with her husband and her children. She enjoys listening to crime podcasts and cooking authentic Mexican meals for her friends and family
